Elm Chinese Painting Table
Shanxi, circa 1900
Suitable today as a large desk or narrow dining table, this type of item is referred to in China as a painting table. Whilst it may well have been used for calligraphy and other forms of art, it would also have served as a more general purpose work surface. It is in a simple, classic style that was prevalent in Ming furniture, but which continued in pieces made later on. Rounded, recessed legs with double stretchers at each end are topped with a curved apron and fit directly into the table top. The table has a dark wood stain and has been restored with a new clear lacquer to bring out the beauty of the elm wood.
