Antique Shanxi Display Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1870
Finished in its original, now worn, black lacquer, this striking cabinet originates from Shanxi province in central China. It may well have been used to hold the books, papers and other possessions of a member of the scholarly classes, although the open lattice doors in the top section suggest the cabinet may also have been used in the kitchen or dining area of the home, with cooked food placed inside ready for serving - the lattice openings allowing for steam to escape. Today it would be ideal for storing books, vinyl or perhaps used as a drinks cabinet.
