Three Drawer Carved Coffer
Shaanxi, circa 1880
This stunning carved coffer still has its original hardware including the studs on the drawers. The black and red lacquer has worn, with the natural elm wood showing through particularly on the top surface. The large upper drawer shows some beautiful deep relief carving, showing flower stems picked out in a now faded green and cream lacquer. Once used to store money and valuables, the chest would work well today as a console table in a hallway or living room.
