Large Elm Console Table
Shanxi, circa 1900
This long, narrow elm console table is in a simple style that was typical of Ming furniture, although the table dates from the beginning of the last century. The rounded legs are fitted with double stretchers and are set back from the table ends. They fit through the curved apron directly into the table top. The table would have been used originally for displaying offerings or as a general display surface. It has been restored with a new clear lacquer. There is evidence of repairs to the ends of the apron but these are in keeping with the original design. Perfect as a narrow console in a hallway or reception room.
