Chinese Trepezium Elm Stool
Shanxi, circa 1900
The seat of this charming stool is in a highly unusual trapezium shape that we've very rarely come across, with the front and rear being slightly curved. Otherwise it has some of the classic features of Chinese stools, with S-shaped braces and horse hoof feet. Made from elm wood in Shanxi province, the original dark lacquer is still in place, though now worn, around the legs and sides. The surface of the seat though is very worn to show the paler wood, with a wonderful patina and weathered character.
