Pale Blue Painted Gansu Sideboard
Gansu, circa 1920
Produced in Gansu province in western China around one hundred years ago, this beautiful pine cabinet was originally made for storing grain. It has been converted into a more practical sideboard by adding wooden hinges to what were once fixed panels on the front. The paintings on the doors are old, showing soft pink flowers, but the lovely crackled blue and cream lacquer finish has been applied more recently to other parts of the cabinet. The pale blues, creams and pinks blend wonderfully to beautiful effect and this would make a pretty addition to any home.
