Orange Lacquer Floral Sideboard
Gansu, circa 1920
This gorgeous two door sideboard has a lovely pale orange finish. The paintings on the front are original and show peonies - a symbol for high status - along with other flowers in muted reds, pinks and greens. The doors are mounted on wooden dowel hinges and there is a single shelf in each side. The sideboard is from Gansu in western China and made from chunky pine. Its original purpose would have been to store rice or grain but today, with the fixed front panels converted into doors and with a full width shelf inside, it would make a colourful sideboard or storage cabinet.
