Blue and Cream Lacquer Painted Buffet
Gansu, circa 1900
This lovely sideboard is from Gansu in western China. The distressed, pale blue lacquer on the top surface and frames is a new addition, but the paintings of landscapes on the doors - now severely faded over time - are old. The three doors are each set in moulded frames. The soft, pastel blues and creams work beautifully together and, with its quite narrow proportions, the sideboard would fit easily into a modern home as a dining buffet or in a hallway. There is an old crack across the doors that has been repaired, but is still visible, adding to the aged appearance of the paintings.
