Dongbei Red Painted Sideboard
Dongbei, circa 1920
This lovely, vibrant red painted sideboard is from the northeast Chinese region of Dongbei. It is in style typical of that part of China, though normally these cabinets would be decorated not only with flowers but also with quite structured geometric patterns in gold. The paintings here show birds and various flowers including peonies for high rank, all in now muted, soft creams, greens and blues. Originally only the central doors would have been present, but the two outer fixed panels have been converted into additional doors for practicality. The post between the central doors is also removable, giving easier access to the space inside, which has a single full width shelf.
