Carved Xinjiang Low Sideboard
Xinjiang, circa 1920
Originally much deeper in size and made as a large daybed, this striking sideboard has been reduced in depth and what were fixed panels in the front have been converted into doors. It originates from Xinjiang in the far west of China, bordering central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan and Pakistan, and the influence of that part of the world can be seen in the beautiful carved designs on the front. Once brightly painted, the old finish has largely worn to the more natural colour of the pine wood underneath, though there are still traces of now softened blues and reds around the front and sides. Low enough to be used as a stand for a wide screen TV, the cabinet would also make a real statement piece in a living or dining room.
