Carved Six Drawer Sideboard
Xinjiang, circa 1920
This extraordinary, beautifully carved sideboard originates from Xinjiang province in far west China, bordering central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan and Pakistan. It would have been made for use as a daybed, much deeper in proportion and without the drawers. It has been reduced in size and what were once fixed panels have been converted into drawers, making it ideal today as a large TV stand or sideboard. The relief carvings in geometric, scrolling patterns are particularly lovely and stand out in the stripped back finish. Originally the sideboard would have been brightly painted, and there are still traces of the old blue finish around the drawers. In a style that is distinctive to the Muslim population of Xinjiang, taking influences from the cultures to the west of China.
