Elm Multidrawer Console
Shanxi, circa 1880
This large table would make a great console, with handy storage space provided by the nine drawers. It was produced in Shanxi province around the late 19th century and is made from elm. Traces of the old dark finish are still intact, so although worn the wood has a lovely rich brown tone. The thick, rounded top extends over four chunky legs, which are supported by a single stretcher beneath the sides. The drawers each incorporate some lovely relief carvings in floral designs with simple ring handles in the centre. Moulded frames around the four upper drawers are fitted with metal studs to add further decoration. A wonderful, rare item from central China that would add real character to any space.
