Elm Console with Four Drawers
Henan, circa 1880
The stripped back finish off this handsome console table beautifully shows off the natural elm wood, with its lovely grain and weathered look. The table is from Henan province in central China and the simple, robust style is typical of the region. The slightly splayed legs are supported by double stretchers and fit directly into the thick, overhanging table top. Four drawers, each with a simple ring handle, are set below the top and provide useful storage space. Perfect as a console in a hallway or reception room, the gorgeous, pale wood is the real star here, with a character formed over decades of wear.
