Elm Daybed Coffee Table
Shanxi, circa 1900
This simply styled low table is from Shanxi province in central China and would have been used as a daybed for seating or reclining. Easily portable, wooden daybeds like this, sometimes with a rattan or other woven material set in the top, would be moved around a home when needed. This one is smaller and narrower than many, with a natural finish that shows off the lovely grain of the elm wood. The legs are recessed under an extended top surface and supported with double stretchers. At the top of each leg is a simply carved 'cloud head' spandrel - a very common decorative element seen on Chinese altar tables and lower level tables and daybeds. The table would be perfect today as a long coffee table, or placed at the end of a bed for seating.
