Painted Low Sideboard
Gansu, circa 1920
This long, low sideboard would be great today as a stand for a large TV. The colours of red, black and cream are typical of furniture from the eastern part of Gansu province, darkened and distressed over time but with a newly applied varnish. The old paintings on the doors of vases and other possessions are now severely faded. The outer doors are a recent addition, made by cutting the old fixed panels. Originally only the two central doors would have been used to access the full space inside. The removable shelves inside have also been added.
