Multidrawer Dark Elm Console
Shanxi, circa 1880
This unusual table, still in its original dark finish over the elm wood, would possibly have once been used as a Chinese scholar's desk. It was produced in Shanxi province in central China, with seven drawers each fitted with simple ring handles. The drawers are set within raised frames, joined with mitred tenons that are typical of traditional Chinese carpentry. Narrow legs end in classically styled horse hoof feet. The once deep black finish has worn over the decades, with the wood grain visible through the lacquer on the top surface and drawer fronts. Great today as an unusual console table, with handy storage space inside each of the drawers.
