Ladies' Antique Elm Desk
Shanxi, circa 1880
This elegant, narrow console is in a style normally used as a lady's desk or dressing table. It was produced in Shanxi province in the late nineteenth century, made from elm wood and finished in a black lacquer. The finish is largely still intact, though worn to a more subtle colour and with the lighter wood underneath exposed in parts around the frames. The three drawers are bevelled and each fitted with a simple ring handle. The legs of the table end in the classic 'horse hoof' that is so distinctive of many Chinese tables. The top surface in particular has a beautiful, worn patina formed with years of use and this would make a lovely console or even a dressing table today.
