Black Lacquer Side Cabinet
Hebei, circa 1900
This charming cabinet in its original black lacquer finish is from Hebei province to the south of Beijing. Its small size means it is highly versatile for modern storage, and its relatively low height makes it ideal as a TV stand. There is some nice carved detail on the apron and on the spandrels, which taper down towards the feet to give a sense of flow. This style is quite common in Chinese furniture, with cabinets like this sometimes referred to as butterfly cabinets due to their front profile. The doors are set within rounded frames and fit directly into the top surface and bottom frame, adding to the understated feel. The simple hardware is a recent replacement for the lost original, but in keeping with the style and there is a single removable shelf inside. The black lacquer finish is largely intact with fairly light wear around the feet, top surface and frame edges.
