Antique Three Door Sideboard
Shanxi, circa 1890
This lovely old sideboard, with its stepped bottom apron and minimalist doors, looks almost contemporary in design but dates from the early part of the last century. It is made from a wood know in China as 'Qiu Mu' - part of the catalpa family - and the old finish has worn and aged to leave a lovely, rich patina on the doors and top surface. The wood grain is especially attractive on the central top panel.
While the shaped apron and drawer handles are in styles that are unusual for Chinese cabinets, the waisted top is a more traditional feature. The three doors open out individually without handles and there is a single full width shelf inside. With a gorgeous tone and natural character from the aged wood, this would fit easily into any space as a kitchen or dining room sideboard or for general storage in a living room.
