Narrow Elm Antique Bench
Shanxi, circa 1900
This simple elm bench is typical of seating used throughout China both indoors and outside. They were used in homes but also commonly seen outside restaurants or shops for use by customers and staff. This one has a lovely, worn patina with the deep, wide grain of the elm wood particularly attractive on the seat. The legs are recessed, fitting directly into the underside of the seat itself and with a simple carved apron. Easily portable and very versatile, use it for extra seating, at the end of a bed, or as a little side table.
