Carved Xinjiang Sideboard
Xinjiang, circa 1880
This ornately carved low sideboard started life as a large daybed in Xinjiang province. It has been resized, reduced in depth, and doors added at the front from the original fixed panels to produce this beautiful sideboard in a very natural wood finish. Xinjiang is a large province in the northwest of China, bordering central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan and Afghanistan along with Mongolia. As such it has a large Muslim population and the geometric carvings of the region's furniture is heavily influenced by Muslim culture. The wood used for this cabinet is willow, with the thick top panel being in poplar. Originally brightly painted, the finish has been stripped back to the lovely pale wood. Great today as a dining buffet or as large TV stand.
