Antique Painted Pillow Box
Shanxi, circa 1860
This unusual little box is of a type used when travelling by the Chinese to hold valuables. The concave lid was designed to support the neck, as the owner would use the box as a pillow when resting. This meant that the contents of the box were kept safe from would be thieves. The original black finish has worn, with the paler wood showing through. The brass clasp is old and the paintings are still visible, showing flowers and a phoenix picked out in red.
