Antique Dowry Chest
Shanxi, circa 1850
This large, multi-compartment chest is in a highly original condition, with the old finish, carved base and handles and even the old iron flat work and nails still in place. It would once have belonged to a young bride in Shanxi province, central China, used to carry her dowry or food for the celebrations on her wedding day. It would have been carried by two people using a pole that slotted through the square hold in the upper handle. The chest is divided into sections, each removable and accessed by rotating the section above, so that different items or foods could be stored in each compartment. A lovely example of a traditional wedding chest, this one is sturdy but with beautiful carved detail.
