 | ATC-70656: Square Table ATC-70656W90 x D90 x H82cm Beijing, circa 1850 Square tables like this had various uses in China. They could be placed in the middle of a room with stools or benches for the family to share a meal, used for mah-jong or other games, or used in a bedroom as a dressing table. In contrast to the west, where most dining tables were rectangular or oval, the Chinese would always prefer a square shape as this made communication at the dining table easier. This example is in elm and is a fairly simple design, with humpback or giants brace stretchers and rounded legs. Still great today for eating or for those evenings of mah-jong! In stock for delivery within 3-4 weeks. Price: 525.00 Now: £395.00 view item

It would most likely have been placed against a wall in the home with a chair either side. The style, with its high waist, humpback stretchers and shaped feet, was common in central Gansu.
