CW05W100 x D50 x H180cm Chinese wedding cabinets like this one were given as part of the wedding settlement, along with the clothes and fabrics they contained. They would then have been placed in the newly-weds' bedroom. Brightly coloured and decorated, they would typically include shelves and drawers for storage. Our wedding cabinet comes in a lovely warm, red lacquer finish (black on request), with a traditional Chinese design hand painted in gold. However you choose to use it - as a drinks cabinet, TV cabinet or for general storage, it will be the envy of many a visitor. Made of reclaimed elm with one fixed shelf holding two small drawers, two removable shelves and a 'secret compartment' in the bottom section. Note that as our Wedding Cabinets are individually hand painted and finished, there will be some variation from the example shown. CT11W45 x D45 X H108cm This type of Chinese chair takes its name from its yoke shaped top rail, and is commonly found in pictorial records from as far back as the Ming Dynasty. Its S-shaped curved backrest contrasts beautifully with the backward bending side stiles, while slightly splayed legs give it a solid appearance. It includes a carved Chinese dragon motif on the backrest, and a rattan inlaid seat for extra comfort. Made of reclaimed elm, these chairs work perfectly with our Ming Dining Table.

CT13W140 x D70 X H43cm The Chinese would place low level furniture such as tables with drawers on the side of the kang platform in their homes to provide convenient storage and a useful work surface. This version is slightly higher and deeper than a normal kang table to act as a more contemporary coffee table or low sideboard, but still holds true to the simple, pure design ethos of the Chinese Ming period. The three drawers provide useful storage for magazines, CDs or DVDs and open in both directions for easier access.

This large cabinet, with its beautifully carved sides and feet, would make for an unusual sideboard today. It comes from Gansu province in north western China, and the red lacquer finish and paintings in black and gold are original. Each panel to the side of the doors depicts a warlike figure on horseback inside a circular frame, while the paintings on the doors are of the more usual vases and ornaments. The central doors give access to the full space inside.

This little cabinet would be great next to a bed or beside a sofa. It originates from Beijing and has the simple design and solid appearance of much of the furniture from around the city. The heavy brass hardware is the only decoration other than the shaped bottom apron. The black lacquer is original and has survived the test of time well, with little sign of wear. ATC-70656W90 x D90 x H82cm Beijing, circa 1850
Square tables like this had various uses in China. They could be placed in the middle of a room with stools or benches for the family to share a meal, used for mah-jong or other games, or used in a bedroom as a dressing table. In contrast to the west, where most dining tables were rectangular or oval, the Chinese would always prefer a square shape as this made communication at the dining table easier. This example is in elm and is a fairly simple design, with humpback or ‘giant’s brace’ stretchers and rounded legs. Still great today for eating or for those evenings of mah-jong!

Benches were used in China particularly for seating at musical or theatrical performances. This bench is in elm wood with a rattan inlay set flush into the seat. The original dark lacquer has worn away showing the natural colour of the wood beneath. The bench is fairly plain in style, with no carvings around the apron. It would be ideal today placed against a wall or even used with a dining table.

ATK-93650W161 x D64 x H67cm Qinghai, circa 1880
This is a rare and quite unique piece from Qinghai province in western China. Qinghai furniture was usually finished in red or black lacquer and brightly decorated. The paintings on this piece are original, depicting vases of flowers and other valuable possessions. This type of decoration, known as ‘bo gu’ in Chinese, was used to denote the status and wealth of the owner of the furniture. As well as the wonderful paintings, now faded and darkened over many years, the chest also has some lovely carved relief at the base, incorporating a ‘double happiness’ symbol. The lid is hinged at the back to give access to the full space inside, with a simple clasp at the front. This would be perfect placed at the end of a bed to add real interest and character to a bedroom.

ATK-05233W165 x D47 x H38cm Qinghai, circa 1900
This lovely low chest is from Qinghai province in western China. It was common for furnitiure from the region to be finished in red or black lacquer, decorated with bright paintings - often showing flowers, as in this case. Chests like this were sometimes given as part of a wedding dowry, along with their contents. The lacquer and paintings on this particular one are entirely original, though now quite worn. As well as the paintings there is an inscription on the left hand side - perhaps a good will message from the parents to their daughter on the event of her marriage. On the right hand side are two 'chops' - most likely the name of either the owner of the trunk or the artist. The hardware is original, including the traditional ring hinges that fix the lid of the trunk to the base. This is a lovely piece with real character that would work well at the end of a bed.
