The word suzani comes from the Persian for 'needle' and these have been produced for centuries along the silk roads of of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries. They were traditionally made by brides to be who would embroider a base of cotton or other fabric with decorative patterns in silk. The finished suzani would then be presented to their husband on their wedding day as part of the bride's dowry.These particular suzanis were produced around the middle of the 20th century in Uzbekistan, but we picked them up recently in Beijing. There is some discoloration in places from use over the years, but the embroidery on each one is exquisite. With rich textures and motifs in soft creams, browns, pinks and blues, they make beautiful bedspreads or throws.
