The more extravagant style of this Chinese altar cabinet is perhaps what many people have in mind when they think of Chinese furniture, rather than the simpler styles of the Ming Dynasty. Cabinets like this were used early on in China (and still are) to hold incense, food and other offerings to the gods and to ancestors. The cabinet shows the raised flanges the wing-like carvings at each end of the top surface that were normally included when a piece of furniture had a religious function. With three drawers and four doors, the cabinet is ideal as an unusual sideboard or for living room storage.
