Shanxi, circa 1920One of two similar sized medicine chests available in our current collection, this particular piece has a total of 30 small drawers, each divided into three sections so that it could have held up to 90 separate herbs. On the front of each drawer is a label to show the contents, read from the top in a clockwise direction to refer to the front, middle and rear sections of each drawer. Three wider drawers at the bottom were normally used to hold papers or medical instruments.
