Shanxi, circa 1920Multi-drawer chests like this were used all over China by pharmacists to hold the herbs and other remedies used in Chinese medicine. This particular piece has a total of 30 small drawers, each divided into three sections so that it could have held up to 90 separate herbs. On the front of each drawer is a label to show the contents, read from the top in a clockwise direction to refer to the front, middle and rear sections of each drawer. Three wider drawers at the bottom were normally used to hold papers or medical instruments.
