Shanxi, circa 1900This little wooden chest still has its original lacquer and painted decoration. The main painting on the front of the box, flanked by Chinese characters, shows a little boy with a goldfish or koy carp in each hand - hopefully about to put them back into their bowl! The box has its original clasp on the front and opens with a removable half board rather than hinged lid. Once used most likely as a child's keepsake box in central Shanxi province, it is a lovely little piece in original condition.
