Shanxi, circa 1850This very striking chest shows the painted decoration that was peculiar to the city of Pingyao in central Shanxi. The paintings show a scene from Chinese legend, with figures within a walled city - possibly Pingyao itself - backed by tall pagodas and mountains. The trunk is around 150 years old but the bottom stand is a new replacement, the original one being either lost or not repairable. The trunk opens through two doors at the front rather than a top lid, meaning that it can be used as a side table while still giving easy access to the inside. The paintings are particularly interesting on this piece, especially as good quality Pingyao pieces are becoming more difficult to source.
