Mongolia, circa 1860This handsome blanket chest still has its original paintings set against the black lacquer surface. The oranges and greens are now quite faded compared to their original vivid colours, particularly the scrolling design around the front edge of the chest, but this gives the piece real character. The chest is constructed using large dovetail joints and thick panels. It has a hinged lid with a simple clasp - certainly a replacement as the original position of the hardware can clearly be seen and the area behind the bottom of clasp has at some stage been refilled.
