Mongolia, circa 1900This old trunk is in an entirely original condition, with very little restoration being carried out. The only modification is the addition of two more modern hinges at the back to augment the original ring hinges, which are still also in place. The hardware, lacquer and paintings all date from when the trunk was first produced in Mongolia around one hundred years ago. It is quite rare now to find pieces from Mongolia in such original condition, so this was a great find. The paintings on the front of the trunk are now extremely faded, but the tigers on each side - designed to protect the owner from evil spirits and intruders - are still clearly visible.
