Qinghai, circa 1900Blanket chests from western provinces such as Qinghai were usually finished in red or black lacquer and brightly painted. This one is a good example, quite rustic in style, but with nicely detailed paintings set against the deep red lacquer of the front panel. These show a pair of flower vases either side of what appears to b a cherry blossom tree - a symbol of feminine beauty and sensuality. The top surface, back and sides of the trunk are not lacquered but in dark wood, while the lid is hinged at the back and fastens with a simple clasp at the front.
