Shandong, circa 1900This beautifully decorated chest is from Shandong on China's northeast coast, and its style is distinctive of blanket trunks from the region. Large and solid in construction, it has a moulded base and still its original heavy brass hardware. The red lacquer finish is original, as are the paintings on the front and sides, depicting flowers and a number of artefacts that most likely belonged to the owner. These include a clock - an item that would have been quite expensive when the trunk was made and was therefore given centre stage in the paintings to show the owner's wealth and status. With the lid hinged at the back, the inside of the trunk is finished in a dark brown lacquer.
