Shanxi, circa 1900This old black lacquer trunk would have been used as a travelling chest for storing clothes and other possessions. The two rings on the front were designed for ropes to be passed through for easier transportation. The finish is all original and the trunk still has almost all of its heavy hardware, including the iron side and corner plates, with their heavy nails, that were used to strengthen the trunk's joints. Rather than more modern hinges, the trunk's lid is attached at the back with more traditional iron rings. This is an unusual piece in a highly original condition that is a nice size to be used as a side table.
