Mongolia, circa 1910Wooden chests were used all over China for storing clothes and fabrics, and would often be stacked in a bedroom. This particular one is from Mongolia in the north, and as such is a more unusual find than the elm and camphor chests that originate mostly from around Beijing. It is in very good condition, still with its original brass hardware. Although the thick lacquer is worn, particularly on the top lid and around the edges, it is still largely intact in a beautifully rich red. The inside is finished with a dark brown wood stain, and the trunk's dimensions make it ideal for use as a coffee table with plenty of storage space inside.
