Shanxi, circa 1860This is another nice example of the type of painted decoration that the city of Pingyao in central Shanxi was famous for. Again the paintings depict characters and scenes from Chinese legend in creams, reds and blues. The top of the chest is also decorated with red flowers and the elegant little brass clasp on the front is original. The once smooth lacquer has worn and crackled over the years, but this is still a lovely little storage chest.
