Qinghai, circa 1850This beautiful pair of chests originated from a village on the border of Tibet and Qinghai province. Usually produced in a pair, brightly painted chests like these were decorated with tiger designs in order to ward off evil spirits from the home, and today make highly unusual side tables. As is common, rather than having a hinged top lid, these two chests are accessed via a removable 'half board' at the top of the front panels. They would usually be stacked in a Chinese home, so this design allowed easy access to the bottom chest without having to move the one on top. The price shown is for the pair of chests.
