Beijing, circa 1900This is a beautiful example of the multi-drawer chests that were used throughout China by apothecaries to store the herbs used in Chinese medicine. This particular chest is still in the original lacquer, including the worn red lacquer top. It also still has original details such as the Chinese characters listing the contents of each drawer, and the shaped frame surrounding each brass handle. The chest has 30 small drawers - each divided into three sections so that it could hold 90 different herbs in total. There are also four slightly larger drawers at the top and three more at the bottom, which would have held documents or instruments of the apothecary. Apothecary chests like this one - certainly ones in such excellent condition - are becoming more and more difficult to find, so this is a particularly special piece.
