Painted Gansu Trunk

Qinghai, circa 1840
This trunk is from the north western province of Gansu, and still has its original finish and paintings, now muted over the year. The painting on the front is of a bird - most likely a phoenix to represent good fortune. Once used to store books and documents, today it is a great size to use as a side table next to a sofa.
