Shanxi, circa 1860Around 150 years old, this leather covered trunk is from Shanxi in central China. Finished still in its original red lacquer, the front clasp is new but the decorative brassware at the corners and along the lower edge of the lid (some gone missing over the years) are all original. The inside is covered with a dark blue fabric. Leather chests like this were common all over China, used for storing bedding and clothing in the home, or for travelling. However it is unusual to find one in such original condition.
