Qinghai, circa 1900This is another wonderful example of the painted chests that were common in China's far western Qinghai province. In this case the worn black lacquer surface is decorated with bright flowers and dancing butterflies - symbols amongst other things of marital happiness. The chest may therefore have been given as a wedding gift to a daughter, along with its contents. The finish and paintings are entirely original, although part of the brass hardware has been replaced more recently. Great at the end of the bed or perhaps as a long, low coffee table.
