Qinghai, circa 1860This is a very nice example of the wedding chests that were traditionally given as part of a daughter's dowry in Qinghai province. The original paintings of flowers on the front of the chest are particularly lovely - the yellows, reds and greens faded over time but sitll standing out beautifully against the black lacquer surface. On the left side of the paintings is an inscription - most likely a message of good luck for the newly wedded couple who would have been the lucky recipients of the chest and its contents on the occasion of their marriage.
