Gansu, circa 1850This old coffer still has its original hardware and lacquer - now severely worn around the lower part to reveal the natural poplar wood below. Originally it would have included only the upper three drawers, with the space behind the lower section only accessible by removing what is now the middle drawer. This 'hidden' section would then have been used for storing valuables. To make the piece more practical for use today, the larger lower drawer has been added more recently. The chest has some nice carved detailing at the side spandrels, as well as the shaped 'deer' feet typical of much of the furniture from western Gansu province.
