Shanxi, circa 1900In common with the majority of furniture produced in Shanxi province in western central China, the large chest is made of elm wood, with a rich, dark lacquer applied. It was used originally as a money trunk, used to store valuables, with the interior being accessed via one or more lids in the top panel. The top panels have been fixed and the drawers have been added more recently using the original panels, making the piece more practical as a modern storage chest.
