Mongolia, circa 1900Like Tibetan furniture, pieces from Mongolia were usually brightly decorated with paintings, with yellows, greens and reds being the most common colours used. The paintings on the front of this blanket chest, showing flowers surrounded by a scrolling pattern in yellow, are original and are now far less vivid than when painted. The paintings are framed on the outside in black lacquer, and the whole effect is a muted finish that would sit well in any modern room. Mongolian furniture with original paintings is becoming increasingly difficult to source so this is a nice find. The trunk has a traditional half board lid on top which is completely removable to give access to the inside.
