Gansu, circa 1880This beautiful table would once have been used to serve wine and simple food. It would most likely have been placed against a wall in the home with a chair either side. The style, with its high waist, humpback stretchers and shaped feet, was common in central Gansu. Pear wood is abundant throughout China and, because of its fine, even texture, it was often used for carvings and panels on furniture. However it is more unusual for it to have been used entirely for a piece such as this.
