Gansu, circa 1900This simple black lacquer console table originated in the western province of Gansu. The construction is fairly plain, with an extending top surface over three drawers and simple stretchers between the legs without any decorative elements. The table would have functioned as a work surface or altar table, and its relatively narrow proportions make it great as a modern sideboard or console, with drawer space for cutlery, keys and other knick knacks. The dark lacquer has worn around the drawers and towards the feet, but the table is otherwise in a nice condition.
