Shanxi, circa 1820The beauty in this superb pair of chairs is not in any over elaborate detailing but in the simplicity and purity of the design. The chairs date from the early 19th century and like most similar pieces from Shanxi province are made from elm wood. The original black lacquer is now quite worn to reveal the natural wood underneath. While the design is very simple, the chairs are beautifully balanced and proportioned. There is also some lovely attention to detail, such as the matching wood grain on the two curved back splats. Once used for the most important house guests or for ceremony, they would today bring a real sense of grandeur to a modern reception room. The price shown is for the pair.
