Shaanxi, circa 1850This beautiful console shows the carved detail that is typical of furniture originating from Shaanxi province in central China - once the political centre of China. The drawers, apron and spandrels towards the top of each front leg are all carved in a scrolling floral pattern, adding fluidity and elegance to the table's profile. The front drawers in red lacquer contrast with the black lacquer table legs and frames, now all worn to show the natural elm wood beneath. The original lacquer on the thick plank table top is now almost completely worn, and shows clear traces of its use as a surface for holding offerings to ancestors.
